A feasibility study, commissioned by the Dumfries and Galloway Council, is exploring the different options for a replacement footbridge on the River Annan.
The study suggests that more than one could be installed.
It’s required this study happens since the two original structures – Cuthbertson Memorial Footbridge and the Diamond Jubilee Footbridge – were lost during the torrential flooding in October 2021.
In January, the work started with site visits and a study of the available information, including a survey conducted by a local group A Tale of Two Bridges (ATOTB) during the summer of 2022.
A community engagement session with committee members from the ATOTB group was held on 20th March as part of the feasibility work.
Amey – traffic infrastructure – is commissioned to undertake this project and gave a presentation, highlighting work that’s happened over the first two months and answered questions from the local authority and committee members.
This early engagement ensures any feedback will be considered during future feasibility studies.
The meeting identified key objectives, including the number of replacement structures, the preferred locations, and how accessible they will be.
Information on flood zone impact, buildability, structural type, non-motorised user access, and indicative cost was provided, as well as identifying the design standards which could determine the overall impact of the scheme – the ATOTB group reached a consensus following the meeting, however, nothing has been made final yet.
Councillor Ian Blake, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities committee said: “Dumfries and Galloway Council along with the Scottish Government have already pledged a total of £75,000 to support the community group, Annan A Tale of Two Bridges, to bring about a new crossing over the River Annan. The next stage is to consult the wider community and determine the number and location of the bridges, and we would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during this process.”
Councillor Jackie McCamon, Vice Chair of Communities committee added: “The new bridge(s) will create invaluable space for walking and will represent a significant improvement to the health and wellbeing of the people of Annan. Not only will a new connection create a safe and convenient active travel route between Annan and Annan Rugby Club and the cemetery, but it also opens up a scenic setting for residents and visitors in the area to relax and enjoy what the River Annan has to offer.”
A public consultation in Annan will be announced in due course.
