A Kirkcudbright residential home is facing the potential risk of losing its registration following a scathing review from the Care Inspectorate.

The report states there are “significant and serious concerns” about the quality of care for the people living at Merse House.

The care watchdog has issued a notice of improvement to Park Homes and wants to see vast improvements made within a month.

A few of the concerns include keeping areas safe and clean, residents are to be regularly given food and drink, and a number of adequate and competent staff on each shift.

Although the watchdog stressed that they “understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families, and staff at the service”, the health and wellbeing of residents is their number one priority so if the care home does not meet the requirements within the given timeframe, they will not hesitate to take further action.

A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said: “An inspection has identified serious and significant concerns about the quality of care experienced by residents at Merse House in Kirkcudbright.

“The report of the inspection will be published on our website in due course.

“We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families, and staff at the service.

“However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of residents of the service.

"Because of our concerns about the safety of residents we have issued an Improvement Notice to the service. This sets out the significant improvements that must be made within a specified timeframe.

"We are in contact with and monitoring the service to follow up on the required improvements.

"If we are not satisfied that sustained improvement has been made, we will not hesitate to take further action.”

An official spokesperson from Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership says they have “been made aware of the improvement notice issued to Merse House Care Home by the Care Inspectorate.

“The welfare of the 27 residents of the Kirkcudbright Care home is the paramount concern for the partnership, ensuring that their needs are being met with the appropriate care.

“DGHSCP is working with Park Homes, the owner of Merse House Care Home, to ensure that they take the necessary action to address the requirements of the improvement notice.”
