Kirkcudbright Bridge closure 'isolating family'
The council shut all vehicle access on Friday evening.
The emergency bridge closure in Kirkcudbright that the local authority called for last Friday evening has been causing problems for people trying to get about, we’re being told.
The council decided to block all vehicle access for the foreseeable future following initial findings from the structural engineers they commissioned.
It is still accessible for pedestrians.
Although diversions have been put in place, back roads have seen an increase in traffic.
One woman who lives in Merse but is regularly in the town has seen this firsthand:
“Me and my dad have been using the Tarff Road. There has been an increase in traffic there. These roads are quite small and windy and have a lot of potholes so we’re going to see a lot of wear and tear as well.”
She also tells us what it’s been like getting about:
“It’s made it extremely difficult getting to appointments at the doctors or to collect prescriptions. To get fuel, yesterday my dad had to go on the nine-mile detour.
“It is definitely isolating my mum from the town because she is disabled so she is unable to walk over and there is a big, long detour she’s not able to drive. She’s not able to go and see her sister.
“Her parents aren’t able to come over to this side of the bridge because they don’t know the backroad so they’re not able to come and visit her. So, it’s isolated her in the sense that she’s not able to see anyone throughout the day.”
Dumfries and Galloway councillors will be discussing this closure at Thursday’s full council meeting.
