A long standing campaign to have Galloway recognised as a Scottish National Park has moved forward. Progress comes after Scottish Biodiversity Minister Lorna Slater launched a consultation inviting communities to nominate their area on Thursday.

The Galloway National Park Association (GNPA) nominated the area within minutes of the consultation opening.

The group has been campaigning for Galloway to be recognised as Scotland's third National Park for five years. Describing their efforts as having 'strong public and business backing', the GNPA list sustainable tourism and increased job opportunities as key potential benefits.

Should campaigns and bidding be successful, the GNPA suggest young people and families will be encouraged to remain or return to the area. Referencing previous community engagement efforts, young people are said to have been widely on board with the movement.

Offering a variety of landscapes, Galloway has been described as a top choice for a new National Park by campaigners

Chair of the GNPA Rob Lucas said: "We welcome today’s announcement and immediately registered our interest in becoming home to Scotland’s third National Park. This is a goal we have been working towards for five years."

"Galloway’s amazing mix of moors, mountains, rolling farmlands and rugged coastlines makes it the ideal choice. What’s more there is strong backing from the public, from business and politicians of all parties – which is vital in ensuring the success of any new National Park."

Highlighting the variation across landscapes in Galloway, Mr Lucas suggests the location could offer a more accessible National Park, with options suitable for everyone from young families to serious hikers.

Mark Ruskell MSP, wildlife spokesperson for the Scottish Greens and Scottish Government said "By investing in our national park network we are restoring our natural world and enhancing our environment."

With a focus placed on sustainability and protecting the natural environment, it seems supporters are keen to see more made of the scenic local area, with potential to raise the area profile significantly.
