A Dumfries woman is pleading for people to stop trolling her online after asking for information about her dog being killed in a hit-and-run.

The incident happened near the A75 at her horse yard when her two-year-old chihuahua Bella had somehow managed to escape onto the road.

Natalie Wilson shared a post online appealing for people to come forward if they saw anything, but instead was sent multiple messages such as "you owe me a new bumper" and that it was her fault.

“I had a friend request within half an hour of uploading that post and I was thinking that they possibly knew something, so I accepted it and straight away, they replied to my post saying, “You owe me a new bumper” and my mind went into a frenzy almost.”

In an interview with Greatest Hits Radio, she told us that the partner of this person also messaged her saying that it was “only banter”.

She says it’s been a difficult couple of days:

“It just added even more to the trauma of what I was going through not knowing if this person had actually hit her now. I just can’t believe there are people on this planet who would react the way that they did.

“It was beyond overwhelming; it is so traumatic to receive these negative comments on top of what I’m going through. You try to ignore them but they’re hard to ignore at that point when you’re already grieving.”

Another message Wilson received was from a dog walker who blamed her for “letting it happen” because she brought her dog onto the horse yard and didn’t notice Bella had disappeared.

She tearfully added “I just can’t even explain how it’s made me feel. When you’ve got guilt in your head already and you blame yourself for stuff, it just made me blame myself even more.

“My dogs are my life – little Bella was my whole world. I loved her to pieces; she was my baby.”
