The Dumfries Town Board who are in charge of allocating £20 million over the next ten years to revive the high street now has an official logo.
13-year-old Sienna Mutch is the designer and has incorporated symbolic and local links into her creation.
The Dumfries High School student was crowned the winner of this competition which involved four of the town’s secondary schools.
The newly designed logo will be used on official paperwork and will be displayed at the new high street office.
Winner Sienna Mutch says she came up with these ideas during her research on Dumfries and "came across the coat of arms and loved the Scottish reference of the stag and the unicorn."
She has also intertwined the Midsteeple Quarter and Dumfrisshire Coat of Arms into her logo.
“I was so surprised when my teacher Miss Hamilton told me I had won the competition and loved seeing my logo be brought to life.” She adds.
Chair of the Town Board Richie Nicoll says he was overwhelmed with the entries that were all up to high standards but described Sienna’s design as a “worthy winner”.
He also believes that this experience was somewhat educational for the pupils who participated after finding out the high school business teachers used the competition as part of their learnable and branding enterprise.
The students had to research Dumfries to inspire ideas for their entries.
Richie Nicoll describes the new logo: “You’ll see the logo gives a nod to Dumfries and Galloway as well as the town. It brings in the stag and unicorn from Dumfries and Galloway crest, as well as obviously incorporating key building: the Midsteeple.”
He adds: “We’ll be using the logo on any type of paperwork that we have now. It’ll soon be going out on the Town Board office windows as well now. It’s very much timeless this design.”
“It gives us an identity”.
Dumfries Town Board are hoping this new addition will encourage people to share their thoughts and what they think should be a priority when regenerating the high street.
James Miodonski from Creatomatic – a Dumfriesshire web agency – and his team, helped judge the entries from the students and helped narrow down the selection process.
He says Sienna should be “incredibly proud of the concept she submitted”.
Sienna says she is "still in shock" but is grateful to the Dumfries Town Board and others for their kind words and the prizes she won.
