Dumfries railway station to get accessibility improvements
The works start this week to give the station better access
Dumfries Railway station is set to get a new accessible access as part of a redevelopment.
Work will start today (Monday October 30) with hopes the project will be finished by the summer.
As part of the work, the current footbridge will be removed and replaced with a new accessible one, with lifts to platforms 1 and 2.
Network Rail’s scheme project manager, Amanda Naughton, said: “We are pleased to begin the construction phase of our project to install a new bridge with lifts at Dumfries station.
“The interest from the community in the project has been great and we are delighted to have developed a bridge design that compliments the station’s unique architecture but improves the passenger experience and delivers modern standards of access for those travelling to or from Dumfries.
“Over the coming months there will be a significant amount of construction activity at the station and we thank passengers and those working and living nearby for their patience as we deliver these essential improvements.”
Train service to the station will not be affected, however there will be some temporary changes to getting to and from platforms during the work.
The project will make accessing the station easier for people with mobility issues, as well as hose travelling with large luggage, bicycles, or small children.
There will be some changes to accessing platform 2 during the bridge removal, and restricted spaces in the platform 1 car park.
People living near the station will be sent letters with key dates and milestones as the project goes on.
