Dumfries Fountain is back in working order following a £400,000 restoration project. Water has been switched on and hoardings have been removed, however the official unveiling is not until the 23rd of June.

The Fountain Restoration Group formed in 2017, supported by members from Dumfries Partnership Action Group, The Stove Network, and Dumfries & Galloway Council.

The group set out with the aim of restoring a ‘jewel in the crown’ in Dumfries town centre, with the hope the fountain will be enjoyed well into the future.

Passers-by were given their first full glimpse of the restored focal point as hoardings were taken down.

Reaction to the project is mixed

Dumfries & Galloway local Mandy would like to have seen the budget spent differently: “I think they could’ve probably spent the money on better things, better things that are needed to help the poverty in the area, rather than that thing.”

However, some passers-by believe the fountain is an important feature. Sarah says: “it’s beautiful, it’s so much better, brings more life to the town…hopefully there’ll be more people coming to visit it.”

Dumfries man Allan says: “A waste of money, they should’ve built something for the children to play in… it looks alright, but that’s not the point.”

Despite mixed response, some locals have been anticipating the return of the fountain.

Yvonne says: “I’ve been waiting to see what’s been happening, I used to love to come and take photos with the clock and everything behind, and the old buildings, so I’ve been waiting to see, you couldn’t see anything behind the screens!”

The project has been in the works for years

The first phase of the restoration project began in 2021, involving inspections of the fountain, as well as a community engagement project. Phase two has seen additional engagement with local schools and young people whilst the fountain underwent refurbishment by Lost Art, a Wigan based company.

Originally unveiled in 1882, the fountain was introduced to commemorate the introduction of fresh water to Dumfries. An entirely new water pumping system has been installed in the recent refurbishment, to meet modern safety standards.

Those behind the restoration hope the official unveiling on the 23rd June will be well attended. New commemorative plaques will be unveiled, along with workshops and live music amongst other forms of entertainment.
