Four dogs have been killed, and an additional six placed in a local rescue centre after an abandoned pack attacked sheep near Moffat.

In a statement, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.40am on Sunday, 9 July, 2023, officers were made aware of a sheep being killed and another being attacked in the Moffat area after a number of dogs were found roaming unaccompanied.

"Four of the dogs were shot and destroyed as a result of this incident.

“Officers attended and safely secured six of the dogs who are being cared for by local kennels.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”

It’s understood the animals are being looked after by Dumfries & Galloway Canine Rescue Centre in Glencaple.

Police have also thanked Lee Herron from Dumfries & Galloway lost dogs, who assisted with the recue effort.

Ms Herron has since posted online to give thanks to the Police and others who have offered assistance: “thank you to every single person who turned up in the area and blocked the road, kept too many people away and offered food, leads, crates and anything else we needed… from the bottom of my heart; thank you!”
