A body has been found in the search for a missing 74-year-old woman who got into difficulty in mud walking in the Solway Estuary.

Formal identification has yet to take place but Shona Campbell's family has been informed.

She left the Moss-side Caravan Park in Cummertrees - where she was staying - late on Monday afternoon to go for a walk and called to say she'd got into difficulty.

A statement from Police Scotland said: "Around 5.40pm on Tuesday, 10 December, 2024, the body of a woman was located in the Solway Estuary, Cummertrees, Annan.

"Formal identification has still to take place. However, the family of Shona Campbell, 74, who was missing in the area have been informed.

"The death is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

A major search was carried out with a police helicopter, coastguard, fire and ambulance all out looking for her as well as Nith Inshore Rescue Life and Moffat Mountain Rescue.

Senior coastal operations with the coastguard Stewart Bryden told {[stationName}} News: "We've done a comprehensive search of the area where she was staying in.

"We did a shoreline search and a helicopter was involved to try to find the lady.

"You've got the dark, the tide and the cold weather - it's always a hazard it's better in the daylight where we can see where we're going. "
