The number of cats being abandoned has grown by 25% over the past year in Scotland.

In 2024, 1,705 cats were abandoned compared to just 1,445 in 2023.

Nine strays and three litters were taken in by Cats Protection in Dumfriesshire over the same period.

The number of cats adopted from the charity has fallen by three percent in the same time.

Fears over 'feral colonies'

David Paterson-McKearney, Operations Manager at Cats Protection, said: "Nine strays and three unwanted litters don't seem like a lot, but if those cats aren't dealt with, the numbers will grow rapidly.

"In the more built up areas such as the cities you do see a larger increase, but in the more rural areas you can see issues such as feral colonies forming if they're not looked after.

"We’ve seen a shocking 25% rise in people abandoning cats this year.

"There's no doubt that the increase we've seen is down to the cost of living crisis.

"One in five cat owners have told us that because of rising cost they're not spending as much on vet services, including missing essential vaccinations or microchipping.

"That means with the cats we are dealing with there's a lot more issues and expense for us to deal with."

"We know tough times can lead to heartbreaking decisions, but abandoning your cat should never be one."

Each cat stays with Cats Protection for an average of 40 days when they take them in, at an average cost of £1,000 to the charity.

They rehome around 30,000 cats a year as well as helping over 1,000 cats stay with their owners who are struggling.

The charity also encourages neutering and provides it alongside other care for more than 157,000 cats a year also.

David says that anyone struggling with their pet should seek support. He said, "We know tough times can lead to heartbreaking decisions, but abandoning your cat should never be one.

"We’re here for every cat’s journey and for every owner who needs our advice and support.

"If you are struggling with the cost of your cat’s care, you can find advice and support on our website."
