Firefighters have dealt with two wild fires in Dorset over the weekend.

A number of crews were called to the Wyke area of Weymouth overnight into Saturday (9th July).

Help was called for at around 1.05am as Bridport's water carrier mobilised to assist crews from Weymouth Fire Station, Dorchester Fire Station, Portland Fire Station, Maiden Newton Fire Station and Bere Regis Fire Station.

One of Bridport's appliances was also sent for standby duties at Portland Fire Station.

Meanwhile, Crews were also sent to a rapidly spreading fire near Lankham Bottom, involving hedgerows and a grass field.

Dorset's firefighters have already warned that with it being warm and dry, fires can spread very quickly.

An amber alert for wildfires in currently in place for the county, from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue (DWFRS).

Group Manager Brad Stevens said:

“While the sunshine is very welcome after the recent rains, it does mean an increased risk of wildfires starting. If you’re visiting our heathlands, woodlands or countryside, please avoid having a campfire and bring a picnic, not a barbecue – just a few simple steps can make a real difference.”

“We’d also remind people to take care if having a barbecue or bonfire at home. All too often, we see property destroyed when an initially small fire suddenly gets out of control. Never leave a bonfire or barbecue unattended, and site them well away from fences, trees or buildings.”

If you see a fire or any suspicious activity, please report it immediately by dialling 999.
