Weymouth’s Veterans hub is launching a scheme to deliver laptops to children who don’t have access to remote learning.

Under guidelines, children without laptops or tablet devices are allowed to go in to school for an education.

We’re being asked to drop off our old and unwanted laptops and tablet devices at the Veterans Hub so they can be delivered to schools, and handed over to children in need.

Wayne Ingram is a paramedic and helps out at the Veteran’s Hub. It was his idea to start the scheme and schools are already approaching him for help.

He said:

“All I’d ask people to do is go into their loft spaces, drawers, under their sofas. We have got so many electrical devices around the house that we don’t use.

“So if we can help them by passing over our stuff that we don’t use anymore then we can give it to the schools, the schools can then make sure these computers, these laptops, these iPads are all safe and have got the relevant documentation on there, and they can start learning in the safe environment.

“If we can try to limit the amount of children going to school purely by giving them the facilities to learn from home, then that’s one hurdle we’ve managed to cross."

How you can help

The Veterans Hub are asking people to drop their devices off between 10am and 2pm.

They’ll then be quarantined for 72 hours to sterelise them, ensuring they’re safe from COVID-19.

Laptops will then be delivered to schools who will make sure they’re safe for use by children.
