'Essential maintenance' planned for Weymouth Town Bridge

It does mean there'll be some road closures

Dorset Council is bringing in a specialist contractor to carry out some maintenance work on the 92 year old Weymouth Town Bridge.

That means it'll need to be closed for a number of nights this month and next.

Work will begin on Monday 14th February, with the bridge closed to all traffic from 10.00pm until 8.00am, for five consecutive nights (ending the morning of Saturday 19th February).

The closure's necessary as the bridge will need to stay lifted throughout, so contractors can inspect the underside.

There'll be no work carried out over half term week (commencing Monday 21st February).

Dorset Council will then return on Monday 28th February for surface repair work.

During that, the road will be closed to vehicles from 6.00pm to midnight each evening for five nights (until Friday 4th March).

Access will be maintained for pedestrians though.

While all of the work's carried out, temporary traffic lights will be put in place during the daytimes.

It's hoped each section of the work will only take two nights, but Dorset Council's allowing five nights in case of complications or bad weather.

We're told bus operators have been informed of the closures and are re-planning routes accordingly.
