Weymouth Nursing Home told new extension inappropriate in design and scale
The home in Glendinning Avenue wanted to add on a four storey extension
Extensive plans to revamp the Weymouth Nursing Home site have been refused.
Dorset Council say the proposals for the Glendinning Avenue home were inappropriate in design and scale, failing to respond to other buildings in the area.
The council was also concerned about the proposed semi-detached new homes which planners said could lead to “unacceptable levels of overlooking.”
The proposals included a four storey extension to the nursing home and the demolition of buildings, together with four semi-detached three-bed homes on the Carlton Road North side of the site.
Altogether Care said the redevelopment of the site would add twelve new rooms and 520 square metres of space, including extra areas for a laundry and more storage and service space.
The extension to the main building was proposed to be mostly built in brick, similar to the existing main building, with a mansard roof to be covered in zinc and a limited amount of wood cladding to break up the appearance of the building.
Extra parking for the site would have been achieved by the demolition of a bungalow at 11 Carlton Road North, owned by the company.
A planning statement said the new 3-bed homes, similar to others in the street, could be used for staff accommodation, for sale, or for letting.
