Newtons Cove Bridge in Weymouth will be closed from today (Tuesday 19th April) for the next eight weeks.

We're asked to use alternative routes until the work's completed in early June.

The footbridge over Newtons Road is having sections removed and repainted off site, before being put back into place.

The paint, which is designed to protect the metalwork from the elements, has deteriorated due things like exposure to the sea air, so the coating needs replacing.

Dorset Council tell us this method will be less disruptive, as repainting the bridge on site would mean the road would be blocked by scaffolding.

The works will take eight weeks to complete, with just a couple of days of road closures

TIMETABLE OF WORKS

For the first two weeks of the works, the bridge will be prepared for dismantling, there'll then be five weeks of off site painting and on site maintenance, and a week at the end of get the bridge ready for reopening.

Newtons Road will need to be closed to traffic for one day between Tuesday 3rd May and Friday 6th May, depending on the weather, for the bridge parts to the lifted away.

There'll also be a one day road closure towards the end of the works for the bridge to be lifted back in.
