The Music Tree aims to get more instruments into the homes of budding young musicians in Dorset

A Weymouth musician is hoping to inspire the next generation of music makers by giving out instruments for free.

Billy Hutchison has started a musical instrument library.

The projects called The Music Tree and will hand out everything from donated guitars to drum kits.

Billy told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset why he’s doing it:

“Post Covid things are slightly more difficult for people and they may not have as much money as they did have. So injecting a little bit of art and creativity into houses is only going to be a good thing, and the other thing is to stop musical instruments being thrown away.”

The instruments which are given out on loan have all been donated.

Billy said:

“There’s about 16 guitars in my front room now, four drunk kits, some keyboards, a few basses, some lovely amps. I can’t believe the generosity of people. And people seem to love the idea of giving it out for nothing. This service is free!

“ If you have not got a mum or dad or aunty or uncle who plays music, what’s the chances of you giving it a go? If your parents play guitar or piano you are certainly going to be intrigued into what they are growing up.

“So its just trying to get some instruments into people’s homes really, and you never know where that may lead.”
