Weymouth cycle lanes set for improvements

Dorset Council's due to work along Dorchester Road very soon

Cycle lanes along Weymouth's Dorchester Road are set for improvements in the coming weeks.

Dorset Council say the upgrades will 'give users a greater sense of safety' and hopefully encourage more people from the Redlands, Broadwey and Upwey areas to cycle into the town centre more regularly.

It's also thought the improvements could mean more Wey Valley Academy students choose cycling.

WHAT'S BEING DONE?

The work will start from Monday 28th February, after the half term break.

It'll start with the existing cycle lane markings being removed, and new ones painted.

Some current road markings at junctions may also be changed.

Kerbing like this will be added to Dorchester Road in Weymouth

Then from Monday 7th March, rubber kerbing and bollards will be put in to better separate the road with the cycle lane too.

That'll take one week to complete and will all take place between 9.00am and 3.00pm, to avoid school run congestion.

Dorset Council staff will be using stop/go boards to control traffic while on site, as they'll be working on one side of the road at a time.

Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said:

“By providing a safer space for on-road cycling on Dorchester Road we can encourage more residents to choose active travel for their short journeys to school and into town.

“It doesn’t take long to install each feature and our workforce will do their best to maintain access to properties, however, please be patient as there may be some moments where residents have a short wait to access their homes.

“Drivers should allow some extra time for their journeys while this work is taking place.”

The project's costing around £65,000 and is funded by the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund.
