A Weymouth woman who defrauded a terminally ill man who was in her care has been jailed for two years.

Kirsty Patricia Flann, aged 31 and of Bradford Road, Weymouth, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday 3 December 2021 after admitting two charges of fraud by false representation.

The defendant began caring for the victim, a terminally ill man aged in his 50s, in September 2020 and went on to become his full-time carer.

In October and November of that year she made applications for a healthcare card, which would have entitled her to £5,000 in private healthcare, and a loan for £10,000, both in the victim’s name. The victim raised his concerns after receiving letters in relation to the applications, which were both unsuccessful.

Police were notified and it was discovered that the applications had been made using the defendant’s email address and mobile number.

Detective Constable Laura Hobson, of Weymouth CID, said:

“This case involved a significant breach of the trust that had been placed in the defendant by a vulnerable victim.

“We will do all we can to investigate reports of this nature and ensure offenders are brought before the courts to face the consequences of their actions.”
