Weymouth business calls police after suspecting romance fraud

They were concerned for a female customer

A town centre business in Weymouth has helped identify a case of romance fraud.

Staff called police after they grew concerned for a female customer.

Police attended and quickly found that a fraud had taken place.

A spokesperson for Weymouth & Portland Police said:

"It was established that the victim had initially been contacted via social media by someone they didn’t know, before the offender gained their trust and asked for money to be sent to them through gift card payments.

"We have made a follow up visit today to further safeguard the victim and enquires are ongoing."

Dorset Police say no arrests have been made.
