The 35-year-running Weymouth Beach Volleyball Classic IS going ahead this year.

But social distancing guidelines will still need to be in place over the weekend of 16th - 18th July.

The tournament's final whistle will blow just six hours before the final easing of lockdown restrictions at midnight on the 19th July.

Steve Davies is the promotions and events officer for Weymouth Town Council.

He told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:

"We're going to take that in our stride, we're going to be fully COVID secure.

"It's really important that people who come to watch it feel absolutely safe, and obviously we look after the players, the volunteers, the helpers, and everyone enjoys it but stays safe."

Seating restrictions will be in place with the grandstand seating, and there will also be hand sanitising in place to keep people safe.

The competition brings 64 players to the town, 32 men and 32 women who compete two a side over the course of the weekend.

Steve added:

"This is the Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball, it's been going on for over 35 years. This is the one they want to play in, and this is the one they want to win.

"It's a great way of Weymouth saying to people 'Weymouth is open, and our events are back on."
