Regulars at Aunty Vi’s café in Weymouth held a socially distanced gathering yesterday to share a final cuppa before the kiosk closes for good.

Weymouth Town Council are taking over the kiosk as a means of generating income.

The decision was met with disappointment and a public petition to stop the plans that was signed by over 1,500 people.

Owner Peter Townsend was there yesterday clearing out the kiosk before closing the doors for the final time.

He said:

“Aunty Vi’s is all about the people, the customers, all the pensioners who come here every day. You can have marriage guidance, financial advice, you can have anything you like here.”

Of the regulars who came along to see Peter on his last day, most expressed their disappointment he would be leaving.

Graham who's a customer said:

"It’s been an absolute lifeline, it really has, really wonderful. I don’t know what we would have done if it wasn’t here."

Cheryl told us:

“It’s just been a great meeting place for all of us. We have so many laughs together, women and men, and it really has been a lifeline with this COVID thing on.”
