A section of West Cliff beach at West Bay will be closed to the public from today (Tuesday 17th May), for the next two weeks.

Dorset Council has put the closure in place while they're on site doing harbour dredging.

It's an annual programme of works, and they've said there'll be 'little impact for members of the public'.

Dredging is needed to keep 'safe, navigable channels' for vessels coming into the harbour.

The work at West Bay is due to be completed on Wednesday 1st June, but we are warned it is weather dependent, so there could be delays if conditions aren't right.

Cllr Ray Bryan, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Travel and Environment, said:

“Our harbours are a vital resource for Dorset’s residents and businesses – as well as a major attraction for visitors – so it’s important that they are well looked after. Dredging is a key part of our maintenance programme and these works will ensure our harbours remain safe and accessible for all who use them.”

Once the work at West Bay is completed, the team will move on to Lyme Regis for similar work from Monday 6th June.

That's been pushed back so that Dorset Council's work doesn't clash with celebrations for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
