Organisers of the Wessex Folk Festival in Weymouth have made the sad decision to postpone this year's event.

The committee usually run the festival over the second May Bank holiday, which means the event will have taken place over the weekend of 4th June.

But, the Government's roadmap out of lockdown won't allow large gatherings until at least June 21st.

It was announced in a Facebook post on the Wessex Folk Festival Page on Sunday.

A Spokesperson from the committee said:

"On behalf of our hard-working committee let me tell you that, although the decision was forced upon us by the Government’s Roadmap, which doesn’t allow for public gatherings until late June, we all feel that it is a necessary and right step for us to take.

"We are thinking hard about how to bring you some music over the summer, and how to support the musicians that we have had to lose from this year’s Festival.

"Just as soon as we can, we will run a few gigs from some of those musicians and bands and we will make sure that you are kept in touch.

"You can be sure that the first weekend in June next year will see us back with the most popular street festival in the South West.

"In the meantime, we will be working to move the Festival forward to even bigger and better things in 2022."

Wessex Folk Festival was last held in 2019 and since then group have been fundraising online with Zoom quizzes and live music.
