A huge project to replace and relocate ageing water mains on the Isle of Purbeck has been finished three days early.

Wessex Water have been working, close to Corfe Castle, on the £500,000 scheme for the last five weeks.

They had to close part of the B3351 near to the Dorset Adventure Park while staff were on site, but that's now fully reopened.

A £500,000 project to secure and enhance the water supply on the Isle of Purbeck has been completed three days ahead of schedule.

It's thought the new pipe will 'enhance water quality and improve reliability' to cope with increasing demand.

Engineers have redesigned the pipeworks, so that around 1,000 metres of the new mains don't run under the road, minimising the need for future roadworks.

Work's also been deliberately carried out now to avoid the busy summer holiday season and while the Studland/Sandbanks chain ferry has also been closed for maintenance.

Wessex Water project manager Louie Cosentino said:

“This was a major investment to repair a cast-iron water main that has burst regularly over the last decade and was no longer suitable for the demand being placed on it.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and have written to both local residents, businesses and parish councils to inform them about the project’s completion. The B3351 is now fully reopened to through traffic at Corfe Castle.’’
