Storm Barra: Walkers urged to stay away form exposed beaches and coastal paths

A Yellow Weather Warning for strong winds and a Flood Alert has been issued for the West Dorset coast

Storm Barra's expected to bring strong winds across Dorset today, with a yellow weather warning in place.

A flood alert has also been issued for the West Dorset Coast.

The strong winds are expected to create large waves and spray overtopping the Dorset coast.

Winds are forecast to be South South Westerly Force 8 gusting to 50 knots at times.

Time of high water at locations along the West Dorset Coast is at 08:45 AM and 09:15 today. (7th December)

The Environment Agency say their incident response staff are closing flood gates and checking defences.

A spokesperson said:

"We are liaising with emergency services and local authorities.

"We will continue to monitor levels closely. "

The Environment Agency has also issued this advice:

"Stay away from exposed beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous. Avoid walking close to cliffs due to the high risk of rock falls in the prevailing conditions."
