Police are investigating after vandals set fire to deckchairs in Weymouth.

A group of people were seen near where the chairs were being stored on the esplanade, last Monday night.

The next morning beach attendants found hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said:

"Staff found that several beach chairs under the tarp received fire damage, with one chair having been smeared in something suspected to be faecal matter.

"Damage is estimated to be more than ÂŁ300 pounds.

"We would like to speak to this group regarding their involvement.

"Damage to beach furniture and equipment effects the whole community, limiting our ability to fully enjoy our beaches. It can also effect our tourist community, deterring some from returning to the area."
