There's a yellow weather warning for strong winds in Dorset today (Wednesday 2nd August), especially along the coast.

The Met Office alert is in place from 4.00am through to 6.00pm this evening.

We're warned that gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph, with stronger winds of 55 to 60 mph in exposed spots on the southern coast.

The area in yellow is where the strong winds are expected to hit

In their alert, the Met Office explains what to expect:

  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Trees and temporary structures such as marquees and tents may be damaged

Further north, there's also a risk of thunderstorms that could drift down to some parts of Dorset.

A yellow weather warning's in place for those from 9.00am to 7.00pm.
