Detectives investigating the alleged assault of two police officers in Weymouth are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage of the incident to come forward.

At around 6.30pm last night (7 July) officers responded to a report from a member of the public of a suspected drug deal taking place on Rodwell Road.

A man was subsequently detained for a search in Garibaldi Row, off Chickerell Road. The man reportedly became violent and was involved in a struggle with the two officers who were attempting to detain him.

One officer sustained cuts to his arm and leg and another suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Two packages containing a number of wraps of suspected class A drugs were reportedly located at the scene of the struggle.

A 25-year-old Weymouth man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, obstructing a police constable in the execution of their duty and possession of a class A drug with intent to supply. He is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Detective Constable Jeremy Cuff, of Weymouth police, said:

"We are carrying out an investigation into this incident and I would appeal for anyone who witnessed what happened to please come forward.

"I understand there were a number of people in the area, some of whom may have filmed the incident on their mobile phones. I would ask that anyone with relevant footage please contacts us."
