Tributes paid to Portland Port boss

A submarine commander who work hard to grow Portland Port for 25 years has died.

Port staff have been paying tribute to Rupert Best who was one of the Board Directors.

Rupert passed away last Wednesday.

Rupert commanded the nuclear submarine HMS COURAGEOUS during the Falklands War. Following his retirement he was instrumental in persuading Langham Industries to buy the port from the MOD in 1996 after the Royal Navy had departed.

Rupert joined the port’s board when the sale was completed and has worked tirelessly to help it develop and grow over the past 25 years.

A spokesperson for Portland Port said:

“Rupert was a keen and successful cider apple grower and was an energetic promoter of all things Dorset. He served on many regional bodies as a very active member and was a Deputy Lieutenant of Dorset. He was a much liked and well-respected member of the local community as well as within Royal Navy circles and will be much missed.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time. “
