Storm Antoni: Strong winds to batter Dorset today
There's a yellow weather warning for the first named storm of the year
The Met Office says it's going to be 'another day of unusually strong winds for the time of year' - as a yellow weather warning comes into force today (Saturday 5th August).
Storm Antoni's due to bring gusts of up to 60mph to Dorset for much of the day.
The yellow alert is in place from 8.00am to 8.00pm.
In their warning, the Met Office says we can expect:
- Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible
- Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen
- Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible
- Some roads and bridges may close
- Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
- Injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties
Some summer events have been cancelled over safety concerns.
We're being warned to visit lifeguarded beaches and take extra care by the sea today.
There could be possible large swells, challenging conditions and unpredictable seas along the Dorset coast.
The South West's RNLI crews warn us to attend lifeguarded beaches and if people get into trouble in the water, to use their FLOAT to live advice.
