UPDATED: Storm Alex hits Dorset

Storm Alex has hit Dorset bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

The A35 has been shut overnight near Dorchester between Dorchester Football Club and the Stinsford Roundabout due to flooding.

The road remains closed.

Dorset Police were called at 2.58am this morning (Friday 2 October) to reports of a vehicle on its side at the Football Ground Roundabout in Dorchester.

No on was injured and the Renault panel van was recovered at 4.17am.

A flood warning has been issued for Preston Beach Road in Weymouth from 8am this morning.

Large and powerful waves are expected as well as the high tide and strong winds.

Flooding is highly likely for the Sea Life Centre and the Preston Beach Road area of Lodmoor.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:

"We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are checking defences and liaising with emergency services.

"Please be careful along beaches, promenades and coastal footpaths and roads as large waves could be dangerous."

Meanwhile waves have breached the sea wall in Swanage causing flooding on the seafront.

The Sandbanks Ferry is currently suspended.

A yellow weather warning's been issued by the MET office and remains in place until 8pm tonight.
