Spennylympics competitors made MBE's
The event was in memory of much-loved Weymouth musician, Spenny Bates
A couple who completed every event during the Tokyo Olympic Games have been awarded MBE's by the Queen.
Charlotte Nichols and Stuart Bates took up the challenge to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Stuart's brother.
Spencer 'Spenny' Bates was a much loved Weymouth musician who died from Motor Neurone Disease.
Stuart and Charlotte's challenge saw them raise nearly £200,000 for the MND Association.
Stuart told Greatest Hits Radio Dorset:
"We are humbled, honoured and our overriding emotion to get an MBE is just sheer shock.
"We are so proud of what we did physically but more so for the awareness it raised across the country and the world of this terrible disease which is still fatal in all cases. For us to raise the profile and as much money as we did, we are really proud of that."
Charlotte said:
"I am just blown away. I wasn't expecting it at all. The letter came and on the envelope it said On Her Majesty's Service and Cabinet Office and we thought what is this?"
So what would Spenny, who was known for his sense of humour, think of his brother being made an MBE?
Stuart said:
"He would be laughing. He would think it's the most ridiculous thing in the world. He would probably come up with some other acronym for the letters M B E that certainly wouldn't mean what it does! Our citation from the Queen says Spennylympics, so to have his name recognised in that way, well it's certainly humbling for us."
