A man's been rescued from a sailing dinghy after it was spotted by a cruise ship in Weymouth Bay.

A major search involving two helicopters and both Weymouth Lifeboats was launched after the sailing dinghy was overdue in returning.

The cruise ship Arcadia alerted the coastguard that they'd spotted something in the water.

The missing dinghy which had one man on board was rescued by Weymouth Lifeboat.

A spokesperson for Wyke Coastguard Rescue Team said:

"At 1.53am Solent Coastguard took a call from the cruise ship Arcadia moored in Weymouth Bay reporting seeing something towards their stern. The ALB proceeded and located our missing dinghy with 1 person on board. He was placed aboard the ALB and brought ashore none the worse for his experience.

"Once safely alongside and having almost established the chain of events that led him to be in the predicament he found himself in strong safety advice was given."
