A blooming great idea – just days remain to enter a competition to come up with a name for new rose garden in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens.

The garden, alongside the tennis courts, has been planted by Dorchester Town Council outdoor staff with a literary theme in mind.

The council is inviting local people to suggest a name for the area – with some councillors favouring a Thomas Hardy connection.

The cost of the project has been met by contributions from an un-named former Mayor and the family of a local man who died last year, with additional funding from the Friends of the Borough Gardens and the town council.

The authority is also considering a new sculpture for the Borough Gardens with designs likely to be invited from local schools.

Entries for the competition close on July 15th with the prize of a David Austin shrub rose for the winner. Under 18s should include a signature from a parent or carer. The winner will be invited to a naming ceremony later in the year.

Suggestions should be sent to the town council at 19 North Square, Dorchester either in writing or by email enquiries@dorchester-tc.gov.uk.
