The local authority want us to have better recycling habits

In the fight against climate change Dorset Council are holding a week long recycling campaign to encourage locals to take action to protect our environment through even better recycling habits.

Recycle week is run by 'Recycle Now' and it's the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often.

Getting recycling right

Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that almost 9 out of 10 people now recycle.

However, 55% of households put items in the general rubbish bin that can be recycled; including aerosols and plastic toiletry (shampoo and conditioner bottles), plastic trays and cleaning and bleach bottles.

This, say Recycle Now and Dorset Council, is where we need to ‘Step It Up’. We can all help fight climate change by recycling because recycling currently saves 18 million tonnes of CO2 every year, which is the same as taking 12 million cars off the road.

Recycle Now and Dorset Council are here to help! Dorset is a county of recyclers – but there are some simple things that we can all do to make our recycling even better.

Top tips for recycling in Dorset:

Recycle more of these items: Food waste (use your food waste bin), toiletry bottles and pots (shampoo, soap, creams etc.)

Make sure these never go in the recycling bin: Batteries (use a battery bag), tissue paper, used nappies, crisp packets, plastic wrapping and clingfilm.

And if you’re at all unsure about how to recycle a specific item, check out the Which Bin? webpages on the Dorset Council website, and remember that Recycle Now’s Recycling Locator can show you exactly what needs to go in the recycling bin where you live – just pop in your postcode!

Gemma Clinton, Head of Commercial Waste and Strategy at Dorset Council:

“Despite the challenges we continue to face as a result of the pandemic and the national HGV driver shortage, Dorset enjoys one of the best kerbside recycling services in the country, which is reflected by our high recycling rates.

"The reduction, reuse and recycling of our county’s waste is a key part of our Climate and Ecological Emergency strategy, so it’s more important than ever that we keep recycling – for the benefit of our beautiful county and those of us lucky enough to live here now and in the future.”

Craig Stephens, Campaign Manager for Recycle Now:

“This year we’re focussed on how recycling can help fight climate change and how by recycling even better we can have a bigger impact on our environment.

"Here in Dorset it’s no different – more and more of us are recycling, so the next step is to make sure we get our recycling right. So come on Dorset, keep up the great work and let’s make the county’s recycling better than ever before!”
