Water safety is being tackled by the harbour consultative group at Lyme Regis – an idea which could be used by other local harbours.

The group is developing a series of guidance tips for safe water use, accessed by using a QR code displayed at the hrabour, to get to the website information.

Nick Marks, who represents the RNLI on the consultative group, told the Dorset Council harbours committee that members had become worried by anyone being able to buy a paddle board and then put themselves, and others, at risk.

“We’re very conscious people can buy a paddle board, drive to Lyme Regis, fling it in the water and jump on it which is a dangerous thing to do, particularly with a busy harbour mouth and visitors pontoons,” he said.

Mr Marks told the meeting, in Dorchester, that the guide would explain to visitors where It was safe to go and where it was not.

He said that the idea had been backed by the RNLI and, if successful, could be adopted by other local harbours.
