The grant comes from the Governments £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund which aims to support performing arts, heritage sites and museums through the coronavirus pandemic.

Portland Museum is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but plans to reopen next year.

The museum will use the grant to maintain the building through the remainder of the year, and ensure it can reopen with COVID-safe measures in place.

It will also help offer improved accessibility and continue essential conservation work.

Angela Scott, chair of Trustees and Portland Museum said:

"This is an important grant which helps to enable us to carry out vital work in a number of areas, while injecting some terrific energy back into the heart of the museum and our local community.

"Our museum really packs a punch as our island packs more history into each square metre than anywhere else I know."

The museum will continue to work behind the scenes to develop new projects including 'The History, Myths and Legends of Church Ope Cove' and the new 'pop up' museum funded by the Arts Council England, Art Fund and South West Museum Development

Angela added:

"Our team has sorely missed the 'real world' contact with visitors to the museum but we continue to connect across busy social media channels.

"We're hoping to extend a warm welcome to visitors near and far in 2021 as we continue to develop innovative ways to connect visitors with the rich, exciting history of the island."
