Police officers in Weymouth have been coughed and spat at while trying to move on 3 men breaching lockdown rules.

The officers were out on patrol around the Esplanade last night (14 January) when they came across 3 men who were asked to leave the area.

One of the men then deliberately coughed in an officer's face and was detained for assault.

The other men tried to intervene and officers used an irritant spray.

Another officer was then spat at, and both men were detained for obstruction.

A spokesman for Weymouth & Portland Police said:

"The shelter where they were sat was searched and a bag containing a quantity of cannabis was located and the floor littered with empty drinking vessels.

"All 3 were arrested and safely conveyed to custody.

"Both officers are uninjured but aware of the transfer risks from Covid-19."
