Police refer themselves to IOPC after driver crashes in Bournemouth

The driver, who was told to stop by police, then went on to crash into another vehicle

The driver of a car that crashed after being asked to stop by police in Bournemouth remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The incident happened on Friday evening on Castle Lane West, with road closures put in place for some time.

Police have since made a mandatory referral to the watchdog.

In a statement, Dorset Police said: "At around 5.50pm on Friday 12 September 2025, officers requested the driver of a Toyota to stop in Castle Lane West in Bournemouth.

"It is reported that the vehicle made off and was very shortly after subsequently involved in a road traffic collision with another vehicle.

"The driver of the Toyota was taken to hospital in a serious condition by the ambulance service.

"The driver of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

"Road closures are in place to allow for an investigation to be carried out at the scene.

"As is mandatory in such circumstances, the Force has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)."
