Weymouth Catholic church could become a community centre
St Augustine's on Dorchester Road is rarely used
A Weymouth church could be converted into a community hall.
The change of use application for St Augustine’s on Dorchester Road follows on from an earlier application to demolish a building to the rear to create five parking spaces.
The church has been seldom used over the last few years with the local Catholic parishes amalgamated in 2012.
The Catholic Diocese of Plymouth confirmed that the church is no longer used and has offered no further information about the use of the building as a community hall in the application to Dorset Council.
The church itself was built in 1835 with extensive refurbishments undertaken in 1970. It was first listed as a Grade II building of note in 1974 and is within the Lodmoor Hill Conservation Area.
No comments, other than the lack of objection from the town council on the proposed change are recorded on the Dorset Council website at the deadline for comments from the public.
