Ancient Bridport oak tree deliberately set on fire

An ancient oak tree in Bridport has been deliberately set on fire.

Firefighters were called to a field near North Mills Road yesterday.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said:

"On arrival crews found an oak tree with a significant fire within the main hollowed out trunk. The fire was extinguished using one hose reel jet and a triple extension ladder.

"The cause is believed to be deliberate.

"Please be vigilant, if you see a fire report it immediately by dialling 999. If you see any suspicious behaviour dial 101."
