Around 75 trees in Weymouth’s Nothe Gardens need work over the coming months with some having to be cut down and others lopped and trimmed back.

Weymouth Town Council has applied to Dorset Council for permission to carry out the work on many of the trees which come under the town’s conservation area.

The affected trees are throughout the gardens on both the town harbour and the Portland harbour side with a cluster needing work near to the Nothe Fort entrance on the Portland harbour side.

Many of the trees needing work are 40 to 60 year old, fifteen of them at least 60 years old, with a number of species involved with planned procedures ranging from felling to raising the canopy or removing defective branches.

Only eight trees are listed for felling, including an Acer, several Ulmus Procera’s, two Fraxinus Excelsiors and a Salix Alba.

Public comments on the application, ref 2022/05107, can be made until September 7th.
