VisitEngland has announced the winners of the annual Awards for Excellence, celebrating the best of the country’s tourism industry, with the South West again outperforming all other regions with 17 national winners.

The Nothe Fort was awarded Gold for Small Visitor Attraction of the Year.

Other Dorset winners included the Acorn Inn winning silver for Pub of the Year, West Bay Discover Centre taking Bronze for Ethical Responsible and Sustainable Tourism and All Hallows' Farmhouse Cookery School winning Bronze for Experience of the year.

The news comes as the Friends of Nothe Gardens look for more volunteers to help manage the attraction.

If you think you could help organise events, fundraise or help with practical tasks, they're asking you to get in touch.

There's a meeting at the Nothe Tavern for anyone who thinks they could help next Wednesday.

There will be an initial meeting for those interested in joining Friends of Nothe Gardens at The Nothe Tavern on Wednesday 15th June at 4pm – come along with your ideas to find out more and help make the Nothe an even better place to be!

Cllr Ann Weaving, Mayor of Weymouth said:

“The Nothe Gardens is a beautiful area in Weymouth which is enjoyed by so many, which is why we’re asking for support from local people to help maintain and support this public space. If you’d like to give back to the community and get involved, come along to The Nothe Tavern on Wednesday 15th June at 4pm!”
