A series of new public artworks are planned for Weymouth - if Dorset Council gives the Town Council the go ahead.

They could go up at 10 places like the Overcombe Corner public toilets, the Other Greenhill Gardens Café, Weymouth Library, the alley alongside St Mary's Church and a wall of the Red Lion pub, amongst others.

The Overcombe Toilets have been picked out as one possible location for the artwork

The idea's being backed by Weymouth BID, to create an art trail around the town centre, using QR codes for people to scan to find out more about the work and the artist.

An application to Dorset Council suggests the scheme is aimed at being an inspiration to locals and visitors:

"We want the trail to bring people together and make people smile on a daily basis adding colour to their life, with the images creating talking points and a positive buzz about the town and on social media spreading its reach well beyond just Weymouth.”

It is expected that the plan will get planning permission, but a final decision has yet to be made.

Senior planning officer Thomas Wild said:

“Overall it is considered that the project would have a positive contribution to the town centre. In particular it is considered that the proposals would contribute positively to the aims of the Weymouth Town Centre Strategy set out in policy WEY1 by contributing to the creation and support of an attractive public realm, improving first impressions of the area and providing support for a thriving town centre."
