Weymouth Town Council is working to replace seafront advertising drums with modern digital screens.

Following a tendering process, Alight Media have been awarded a contract which will see all 12 of the existing advertising drums along the seafront replaced with digital advertising screens – from the Pavilion end of the beach to the entrance of Lodmoor Country Park.

The company will be responsible for the planning application to install the drums, construction, installation costs, ongoing maintenance costs, sales, as well as any repairs that may need to be carried out to the units.

The existing drums will start to be taken out and replaced in July.

Jane Biscombe, the council’s town clerk, said: "Replacing the existing advertising drums with digital screens will mean Weymouth Town Council is able to invest money back into the town and keep the precept as low as possible through the income generated.

"The new screens will provide regular opportunities for businesses and local groups to advertise their events and services due to the high footfall in this popular part of our coastal town."

Dave Huckerby, director of Alight Media, added: "Alight Media is delighted to have the opportunity to work in partnership with Weymouth Town Council to operate an advertising digital screen network that will provide revenue and communication benefits to the council."

The council will also receive 10 per cent of the screentime to promote non-commercial services such as community groups and events.

The initial contract will run for five years with the ability to extend the contract based on performance.
