A special music event is being held to bring asylum seekers on board the Bibby Stockholm together with the community on Portland.

Let Music Unite is being organised by Portland Global Friendship Group and is part of the B-side fringe festival.

A variety of musicians, including artists who were refuges themselves, will take part in the event this Sunday on Chesil Beach.

The government has announced it will not be renewing the contract for the Bibby Stockholm when it finishes at the end of the year.

Heather from Portland Global Friendship group said:

“We aim to make a free, positive event where our community can come together each year, Our community has experienced a lot of divisiveness and negativity, however I'm proud that we have responded positively to the residents on the Bibby Stockholm.

"The residents all talk about what a welcoming and kind community we are and many now volunteer locally and want to give back locally. This event is about celebrating unity, love and friendship.”

Lisa Shimmin, a Portland resident told us:

" I attended last year and it was brilliant to watch people dance together from around the world, it gave a real sense of unity and togetherness. Our community has been through a lot over the last year, so events like Let Music Unite are needed.”

Akhtar Mohammed, a refugee from Afghanistan, who now lives locally said:

"Music is a universal language and has so many benefits. Afghanistan is well known for it's music but the current government, the Afghan Taliban, has seized and destroyed more than 21,000 musical instruments in one year.

"Though encouraging empathy, elevating voices for justice and giving out messages of unity music can be utilised to combat racism and hate. It encourages understanding, cross cultural barriers, and motivate people to work together for constructive change."

The event is on Sunday 1st September between 1pm – 8pm, on Chesil beach, Portland near Quiddles Cafe and bar.
