A 74-year-old man is due to appear in court in connection with the alleged racially aggravated abuse of a football player at a match in Bridport.

The incident happened during the second half of a match between the reserve teams for Bridport FC and Gillingham Town FC at St Mary’s Field in Skilling Road on Saturday 9 October this year.

It was reported that a player for Gillingham Town FC was racially abused by a member of the public watching the match. The referee intervened, before the member of public was asked to leave the ground.

Following enquiries, a 74-year-old local man attended a voluntary interview with police.

He is now due to appear at Weymouth Magistrates' Court on Friday 21 January 2022 for an offence of racially aggravated intentional harassment.
