A new 'Memorial Corner' has been created at Dorset Council's office in Dorchester.

The space at County Hall includes the existing War Memorial, but has been completely renovated and now also pays tribute to front-line workers lost during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Council's Highways Team have done most of the work, after the project was started by Dorset Council Chairman, Cllr Val Pothecary.

New, accessible paved seating's been put in, along with refurbished walls, steps and planters.

Nine new panels have been installed to honour those lost to Covid, designed by Portland artist, Ellie Newbury.

Cllr Val Pothecary, Chairman of Dorset Council, said:

“This beautiful, modern work consists of nine metal panels and has been designed by local artist, Ellie Newbury. The recent COVID pandemic affected all of us in one way or another and it’s important to show our respect and give thanks to those who selflessly gave everything in the care of others.

"Memorial Corner will be a place where we can reflect and remember those that we tragically lost during that difficult time, as well as a place to remember those who bravely fought during wars and conflicts."

The new memorial will be dedicated later today (Wednesday 28th September) at 2.00pm.

The event will be livestreamed on the Dorset Council Facebook page.
