A man's been rescued from a drifting life raft near Portland Harbour.

He'd been making safety checks when it came loose from its mooring at Smallmouth Beach.

Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team and Weymouth Lifeboat were both dispatched.

A spokesman for Portland Bill CRT said:

"Due to the darkness and distance the liferaft had travelled in the offshore wind, the team was unable to see it from shore.

"Weymouth Lifeboat ILB was tasked and quickly on scene.

"They managed to locate the raft and recover it and take the gentleman back to shore to the awaiting CRT.

" A welfare check of the casualty was conducted and safety advice given."
